Humility is the number one virtue we must strive every day to practice. There is no saint in heaven who did not learn how to be humble. In fact, we cannot hope to be saved without the virtue of humility. Christ exhorts us to learn from Him and to be humble of heart. Of all the things worthy of imitating our Lord Jesus Christ, He only asks that we be humble. It is through humility that we learn to practice all the other virtues. Without humility we have nothing. God exalts the humble and strikes down those who act with pride!

There is no greater act of humility than when Jesus Christ became flesh to save us from our sins. Let us beg God humbly for mercy as the publican in the gospel. Let us ask God to make us truly humble of heart!

Maria Immaculata,

Father Jeff Fasching

“My house is the house of prayer, but you have made it into a den of thieves.” Jesus Christ always pointed to God the Father. When His holy Temple was being abused He quickly put an end to it. The purpose of the Temple was to provide a place for divine worship, not to engage in business trades.

The purpose of our Catholic churches is to offer a space for divine worship and nothing else. Our churches are consecrated and set apart as places to offer holy sacrifice. They too are houses of prayer! We have the privilege as Catholics to have Jesus Christ present-Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in our tabernacles! We owe Him the utmost reverence when we enter a church. We owe Him all our attention as long as we are there. We should never abuse the great gift Christ has given us in making Himself literally present in our churches!

God always offers us His grace. However, sometimes we must exercise great effort and sacrifice in order to receive it and benefit from it. Think of all the people who put strenuous effort into making money and amassing riches. Think about how so many people strive for earthly honors and rewards with all their might. We must exercise the same zeal when it comes to the salvation of our souls. If we put all our effort into striving for holiness, there is absolutely nothing we cannot accomplish!

Saint Paul emphasizes the power of the Spirit we have received making us sons of God. We must nourish the gift of God in His Spirit through our prayer and good works. If we make this our first priority, God will bless us abundantly!

Jesus Christ is Wisdom Incarnate. In His divine Providence He draws all men to Himself through His Precious Blood shed upon the Cross. He exhorts us to do His will in all things. In order to discern the divine will we must constantly give ourselves over to prayer. Prayer is the life-blood of our souls. Prayer is what unites us to Jesus Christ and gives us strength and wisdom to carry out His will. Therefore when we pray we must always pray for wisdom-a wisdom that allows us to see as God sees. In fact, this is the grace we pray for when we meditate upon the fourth luminous mystery of the holy rosary. We ask that we see with the transforming vision of God, and not our own limited vision!

Christ died in order to free us from the slavery of sin and the power of satan. He won victory over satan by shedding His blood on the cross. We share in this victory by virtue of our baptism! We too have power over all sin in and through Jesus Christ! In fact, our baptism is symbolic of our dying to sin and rising to a new life in Jesus Christ. We must constantly fight against the temptation to sin. But we must also realize that God gives us the grace and power always to overcome it. The choice is ours.

We are meant to be saints. Sanctification is a grace from God. We must strive to cooperate with that grace by being faithful to it. We must strive to be people of charity and follow God's great commandment of loving Him above all and then loving our neighbor as ourselves. Sins against charity are offenses against God!

In Christ,

The scriptures remind us that we are pilgrims on a journey. We do not belong to this world. Heaven is our true homeland and we must acquire it by God's grace and our own good works. We shouldn't seek after too much happiness in this world because before we know it the time will come for us to leave it. We must prepare for eternal life now.

When we keep death before our eyes we learn to despise the goods of this world. We live well when keep in mind our last day. God has prepared for us a home with Him in heaven. We must use this life to make ourselves ready!

In Christ,

Father Jeff Fasching
