Saint Agnes Cathedral celebrates First Holy Communion Mass on Sunday, May 3rd at 2:00pm.

The Latin Mass on Sunday, May 3rd will be at 7:00pm.


Christ has confided to His Apostles the sacred deposit of the truths which are to form the object of our faith. During these forty days of Easter we must follow Him in His work of instituting the sacraments. We must not only believe, but we must also incorporate within us the great fruit of our redemption which is called grace. We are living members of our Divine Head and thus joint heirs with Him in the Kingdom of Heaven! It is by means of the sacraments that Christ produces in us this wondrous work of our justification. He applies to us His Incarnation and Sacrifice by a means which He Himself in His power and wisdom has instituted.

When instituting the sacraments, our Lord assigned to each an essential rite: and this rite is outward and sensible. He made the Flesh, which He united to His Divine Person, become the instrument of our salvation by His Passion and Death on the Cross. He redeemed us by shedding His Blood for us! The same is true with respect to the sacraments. He follows the same mysterious plan, taking physical things as His auxiliaries in effecting the work of our justification. He raises them to a supernatural state, and makes them the faithful and all-powerful conductors of His grace.

Christ is the Good Shepherd. On the Cross His sufferings fulfill the prophecies written about the suffering servant Yahweh in the Book of Isaiah (52:13-53:12). His sufferings have a redemptive value. Christ takes our sins upon Himself and offers them on the Cross to God the Father as an atoning Sacrifice. We are now dead to sin and have the ability to live in righteousness and holiness with the help of God's grace!

No matter what suffering may come our way, it cannot compare to the suffering of Our Lord. When we unite our sufferings to the Passion of Jesus Christ, we have the opportunity to merit reward in heaven!

Christ is the Good Shepherd...”I will seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered” (Ezek. 34:12).

Zeal for my Father’s house has eaten my up, says Jesus Christ (psalm 69). Our Lord cannot tolerate disorder or anything unbecoming in His Holy Sanctuary. The Church is a House of Prayer and the palace of the King of Kings. We should have a jealous care of the cleanliness of the table of the altar. It is the throne on which the Divine Majesty descends! We must guard the purity of the holy vessels which will touch the Immaculate Lamb, and the decency of the vestments which must cover Christ in the person of His priest while the Holy Sacrifice is being offered. Those priests who truly love Jesus Christ perform with dignity and with great reverence the slightest ceremonies of the Sacred Liturgy. They do it with attention, with mind and heart united with Christ, the High Priest.


When a priest offers the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, heaven itself bends down toward him with reverence and gratitude. The angels and the Blessed surround Christ’s priests with veneration and urge them to offer the Divine Victim. They pray that we unite their adoration with that of the Sacred Host which the priest holds in his hands. The Blessed Virgin Mary herself, the Queen of all priests, is present each day at the Holy Sacrifice. She is happy to renew, thanks to her priests, the offering of her Son which she once made in tears at the foot of the Cross.


Your are invited to join myself and Father Justin Nolan, FSSP, associate pastor of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne parish in Kansas City, who will be visiting St. Agnes on Friday, March 13. He will give a talk entitled, "The Liturgical Principles of the Mass: The Most Beautiful Thing This Side of Heaven". There will be a meet and greet with Fr. Nolan at 4 pm, followed by a potluck dinner at 5 pm. Fr. Nolan's talk begins at 6 pm. The event will be held in the school cafeteria. All are welcome!

God gives us so many gifts! Health, family, friends, talents, money...the list goes on and on. These are given to us not to be abused in vain ways, but in order to help our souls to sanctification. God gives us so many gifts of grace and holy inspirations. He gives us years and years of life upon this earth to repair and make up for past sins. However, many still refuse to amend their lives.

Many will regret neglecting the very little that was required of them to do while upon this earth in order to save their souls! For example, practicing mortification, overcoming human respect, avoiding occasions to sin, avoiding bad company, and turning to God in times of temptation. Many will be lost because they neglected these simple things.

Our lives are very short. We must sincerely beg God for the desire to amend them!

Jesus Christ has certainly done all things well. He was very often found healing the sick, curing diseases and bringing comfort to those who were physically challenged. He made the deaf hear and the dumb speak. He raised people from the dead. He constantly sought to draw sinners to Himself. His heart burned for others to believe in Him for who He was.

Even more important than physically healing His followers, Christ often forgave sinners and pointed out to them their new life in Him. Christ continues to draw all who choose to believe in Him to Himself. For those who possess a lively faith, Christ invites them to an even more intimate union with Him! This is what His heart desires! We were born to be with our God. He has come among us in the person of Jesus Christ and yet so many people are indifferent to all His favors and benefits!

Jesus Christ suffered and died for us to reconcile us to His Father. His desire to be with us and dwell peacefully in our hearts is so strong that He makes Himself miraculously present in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar! If this were not enough, Christ even commands that we eat His Flesh and drink His Blood, found literally present in the Holy Eucharist! How many people remain cold toward the God that created them and wants to be with them?!

It is true that none of us are worthy of such an intimate union, but Christ has come for sinners! The more we frequent the sacraments with the dispositions of humility and a desire for conversion, the less unworthy we become of receiving Jesus Christ. Christ waits for us. He is a gentleman. He will not force Himself upon us. Choose for Christ today!

God always offers us His grace. However, sometimes we must exercise great effort and sacrifice in order to receive it and benefit from it. Think of all the people who put strenuous effort into making money and amassing riches. Think about how so many people strive for earthly honors and rewards with all their might. We must exercise the same zeal when it comes to the salvation of our souls. If we put all our effort into striving for holiness, there is absolutely nothing we cannot accomplish!

Saint Paul emphasizes the power of the Spirit we have received making us sons of God. We must nourish the gift of God in His Spirit through our prayer and good works. If we make this our first priority, God will bless us abundantly!

Jesus Christ is Wisdom Incarnate. In His divine Providence He draws all men to Himself through His Precious Blood shed upon the Cross. He exhorts us to do His will in all things. In order to discern the divine will we must constantly give ourselves over to prayer. Prayer is the life-blood of our souls. Prayer is what unites us to Jesus Christ and gives us strength and wisdom to carry out His will. Therefore when we pray we must always pray for wisdom-a wisdom that allows us to see as God sees. In fact, this is the grace we pray for when we meditate upon the fourth luminous mystery of the holy rosary. We ask that we see with the transforming vision of God, and not our own limited vision!

When we genuinely fulfill the law of Jesus Christ and accept the Word of God completely, we will always be successful! In addition, we will discover that God will give us a spirit that comes from knowing “the glorious freedom of the children of God.” This is a spirit of confidence and joy much like the Apostles possessed after receiving the Holy Ghost. It is a confidence that enables one to boldly proclaim one’s faith in every circumstance. This is our Christian duty. If we have any shame or hesitation in doing so we are denying Jesus Christ. A failure to profess one’s faith for fear of ridicule or criticism is sinful.

Saint Paul speaks of the greatness, the dignity and the duty of the Christian priest. He is a minister of Christ and the instrument of Christ. The priest is “another Christ.” A priest is appointed steward of the mysteries of God for the benefit of the mystical body of Christ. Pope Pius XI writes the following regarding the office of the priesthood: “The Christian, at almost every important state of his mortal career, finds as his side the priest with power received from God, for the purpose of communicating or increasing that grace which is the supernatural life of his soul.”

In the Book of Revelations we read:

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband, and I heard a great voice from the throne saying, “Behold the dwelling of God is with men. He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be with them. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away.”

Advent is a time of hope and expectation. We look forward to a renewal. We look forward to a time when creation itself will be set free from its bondage to death. God has in store for His children things that we cannot imagine now, but one day we shall see God as He is. We are made in God’s image. Since we share in His divine nature we hope for the day that we will be able to see God as He sees Himself!

Sunday, December 8th is the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Your prayers are requested for those who will be making their Total Consecration to Jesus Christ through the Blessed Virgin Mary during Mass on this day.

The Blessed Virgin Mary was conceived by the Holy Ghost without any stain of original sin. Mary has therefore been distinguished by the grace of God as the holiest of all the saints. She has been set apart by God from the rest of mankind as God’s perfect and sinless creature. The Blessed Virgin’s glory and majesty are due to her sinlessness. The graces she stored up while she walked upon this earth were infinite. These graces elevated her to Queen of heaven and earth and of all the saints! Mary has never been under Satan’s power. We should therefore pray to God through her that we too never succumb to the devil’s influence. “O Queen conceived without original sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!”

Christ’s victory on the cross is a victory over sin and Satan. On the Day of Judgment this victory will be seen clearly. The month of November is dedicated to the Holy Souls. On all the days of November from November 1 through November 8 inclusive, a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls, is granted to those who visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the departed. Partial indulgences are granted to those who recite Lauds or Vespers of the Office of the Dead, and to those who recite the prayer “Requiem aeternam dona eis. Domini, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Requiescant in pace” (“Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace”).

The Blessed Virgin Mary infinitely surpasses the angels in grace, merits, and dignity, and in all other perfections! How is it then possible not to love Mary? The world without Mary’s prayers would long ago have ceased to be. The graces we receive from heaven come though her hands. If God had treated us as we deserved after all our sins, we would long ago have been burning in hell. How many countless souls has Mary saved from the fires of hell?! We must really thank the Blessed Virgin Mary for our salvation because she throws herself at the feet of Jesus Christ and asks Him to give sinners more time in order that they may amend their lives.

Mary points out to the Father all that her Son did and suffered for mankind in order to avert His wrath. She reminds her Son of everything that she suffered during her life for His sake. We can only imagine the affection of this holy mother. How can there be people who despise her? How can people ridicule those who are devoted to her?

The Feast of the Holy Family offers us a chance to reflect upon God’s eternal truths and the true meaning of life. We are a pilgrim people and the true home we were born for is in heaven. In this world filled with temptation and the pride of life we must learn the great value of silence. We should ask God for the gift of meditation and reflect upon that which is spiritual. We should pray each day for a well-ordered and disciplined life of prayer. We must first be rooted deeply in Christ if we hope to fulfill our duty as Christians to bring Him into a world where so many are in desperate need of His grace.

The Feast of the Holy Family should also help us to understand the importance of family life. The family is the basic unit of society. However, it is rapidly deteriorating and in many places almost completely vanquished from our culture. The family is the context in which children were meant to be raised.

We should also reflect upon the value of work. Jesus Christ chose to become the Son of a carpenter. He was never too proud to embrace an honest day’s work. Saint Paul writes in his Epistle: “All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father by Jesus Christ our Lord.” We should put all our hearts into everything we do and do all for love of God alone. If we can truly say that love of God is our motivation then we are on the path to holiness.

Jesus Christ loves pure souls. His Mother Mary was immaculate. His foster-father was the just and chaste Joseph. His well-beloved disciple was the virgin apostle. Over the course of centuries Christ has surrounded Himself with a legion of chaste priests. Nothing soiled can approach his altar. Pure souls are the crown of Christ’s glory, the strength and beauty of the Church, the confusion and terror of demons!

Priestly chastity is a precious pearl, but we are all called to live chaste lives! God has left our human nature with a tendency toward evil, its passions, and its secret connivance at sin. But at the same time He has poured out prodigally upon us His divine strength through the indwelling of the Holy Ghost. We have been given mortal bodies with frailties, inconstancies and revolts, but Christ has prepared us for heavenly food, the bread of angels, His Body and Blood, to extinguish within us the fire of sin, to renew our strength and to sustain our courage!

God permits the angel of Satan to lay snares for us, to subject us to incessant combats, but Christ has confided us at the same time to His Mother. She has crushed the head of the serpent! She will always fight for you if you are faithful in appealing to her for aid. With her help you are sure to triumph. But know well that it is necessary to watch and to pray even to old age, even until death. Be courageous! No one is tried beyond his strength! No one will receive a crown unless he fights manfully!

Be chaste. How miserable your heart will be if you simulate virtue when your conscience accuses you of wickedness! In today’s culture we are in almost constant contact with the slime of sin. Vice speaks to us, looks at us, surrounds us and pursues us wherever we go! How can we avoid filth unless we are vigilant? We must keep a firm and constant hold on the divine hand of God!

Chastise your body and bring it into subjection. Flee from the occasion of sin. If to avoid sin it is necessary to sacrifice your eye or your right hand or your very life, do not hesitate. Otherwise you will fall, you will perish. Confess your faults humbly. Have recourse to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Virgin Most Pure, that you may fight your battle with strength and confidence!

Jesus Christ emphasizes His power to forgive sins in today’s Gospel. However, we must remember that God does in fact inflict punishment upon those who remain obstinate. The Scriptures do not mention any sin so severely chastised as the sin of impurity. There are many examples, but perhaps the most popular is the great deluge. It was because of sins of impurity that God sent upon the earth the great flood, when it rained for forty days and forty nights. With the exception of eight people along with Noah and the ark, all were destroyed. Saint Isidore writes: “There is no vice which so much enslaves men to the Devil as impurity.” It isn’t enough to simply fight impurity; we must win the victory and root the sin out of our lives permanently!

We must pray and flee from all occasions to sin in order to be successful in our efforts. It is impossible to conquer this vice without God’s assistance. If we are tempted to sin against chastity, we must immediately turn to God for help. We should pray the Hail Mary and repeat the Holy name of Jesus Christ. We must rid ourselves of the thoughts instantly; otherwise Satan will redouble his efforts to attack.

The best reasons for praying the Holy Rosary are the following:

1) For world peace… “Say the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world.” (Our Lady of Fatima, 1917). The Popes have highly recommended the Rosary to promote peace throughout the world.

2) A means for preserving the home…”There is no surer means of calling down God’s blessings upon the family…than the daily recitation of the Rosary”… Pope Pius XII

3) For courage in the hardships of life …”a powerful means of renewing our courage will undoubtedly be found in the Holy Rosary”…Pope Leo XIII

4) As a ready and easy means of preserving the faith…”We have elsewhere brought it to the attention of the devout Christian that not least among the advantages of the Rosary is the ready means it puts in his hands to nurture his faith, and to keep him from ignorance of his religion and the danger of error”…Pope Leo XIII

Many saints have had mystical experiences of hell. One well know account is contained in the report on the Fatima apparitions which Lucia Santos, one of the seers of Fatima, submitted to Dom Jose, bishop of Leiria, on 31 August 1941. Lucia writes that during the apparition of 13 July 1917, Our Lady gave the three children a momentary glimpse of hell to encourage them to pray for sinners.

After the vision ended, Our Lady urged the children to pray and offer many sacrifices to save sinners from hell. The Holy Rosary is a most powerful means to do so! It is a weapon to combat evil. It is a powerful means of obtaining Christian perfection and graces from God.
