The first Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of the Liturgical Year. Christ’s coming is twofold: in mercy and in justice. Saint Paul therefore exhorts us to “cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light.” We must put on the Lord Jesus Christ. We prepare for Christ’s coming by striving to amend our lives and praying for true contrition for our sins. When we petition our Lord in prayer, amendment and contrition must always be at the top of the list.

This Advent let us mortify ourselves. We now have a wonderful opportunity to do penance for our sins and display our sincere love for Jesus Christ as we anticipate His return.

Saint Paul exhorts us to give thanks to God the Father for the countless gifts He has bestowed upon us in the person of Jesus Christ. God has made us worthy to share the lot of the saints in light and delivered us from the powers of darkness by the blood of Jesus Christ. Today we rejoice because we have been freed from our sins through the death of Jesus Christ. We should be reminded that we cannot neglect to show our appreciation for what God has done for us without suffering the consequences. Indifference towards God love permeates our culture. Many are choosing death over life in Christ Jesus. Let us embrace life with the saints and pray for those who do not.

Requiescant in pace” (“Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace”).

All indulgences whatsoever may be applied to the Poor Souls at any time by way of suffrage. The simple intention to offer them for the Poor Souls is sufficient.

Many desire God, but fear death. They are afraid of the assaults of Hell upon their souls. Even the saints have trembled at the hour of death, so how much more should we be afraid! Although it is true that Satan attacks even the holy saints at their hour of death, it is also true that God always comes to their aid at that moment. When dangers increase God helps all the more. The powers of Hell will assault the dying Christian, but his guardian angel will also be present to offer consolation. Saint Michael will also come to his aid. He has been appointed by God to defend His faithful servants in their last fight against the powers of Hell. The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, will assist those who have been devoted to her during their lives. Jesus Christ Himself will give those souls for whom He died confidence and strength to resist the powers of the enemy.

We should therefore rejoice at death! Death delivers us from this valley of tears and labor. At death we are free from suffering. Death also delivers us from our actual sins and the danger of falling into Hell. Through death, paradise is opened up for us!

Sunday, October 28 is the feast of the Kingship of Our Lord Jesus Christ. One may gain a plenary indulgence by the public recitation of the Act of Consecration of the Human Race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We will recite the consecratory prayer immediately following the 2:30pm Mass.

The month of November is dedicated to the Holy Souls. On all the days from November 1 through November 8 inclusive, a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls, is granted to those who visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the departed.

Act of Consecration of the Human Race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus:

Most sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race, look down upon us, humbly prostrate before Thy altar. We are Thine and Thine we wish to be; but to be more surely united with Thee, behold each one of us freely consecrates himself today to Thy Most Sacred Heart.

Many indeed have never known Thee; many, too, despising Thy precepts, have rejected Thee. Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus, and draw them to Thy Sacred Heart. Be Thou Kind, O Lord, not only of the faithful who have never forsaken Thee; but also of the prodigal children who have abandoned Thee: grant that they may quickly return to their Father’s house, lest they die of wretchedness and hunger.

Be Thou King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions, or whom discord keeps aloof, and call them back to the harbor of truth and unity of faith, so that soon there may be but one flock and one Shepherd. Be Thou King of all those who even now sit in the shadow of idolatry or Islam, and refuse not Thou to bring them into the light of Thy Kingdom.

Grant, O Lord, to Thy Church, assurance of freedom and immunity from harm; give peace and order to all nations, and make the earth resound from pole to pole with one cry: Praise to the Divine Heart that wrought our salvation; to it be glory and honor forever. Amen.

Jesus had willed to be as entirely dependent upon His Mother as a tiny infant. If I am to please God as a priest, Christ must be allowed to continue toward her through my ministry that humble and loving subjection. I undertake nothing without her, without her counsel, without having asked her to enlighten me. Jesus willed to have her consent not merely to receive His human life, but also to lay it down on the Cross, for she had received a mother’s power over Him from His Father. So I also pay her the homage of my whole priestly life, of my activity, of my joys, of my suffering, even my death, because I am her son, I belong to her.

Christ’s well-beloved Mother, after having given Him His human existence, the material of His Sacrifice, offered Him to the Eternal Father as a holocaust at the foot of the Cross. And so, invisibly present at every Mass, she continues with me, her priestly son, to offer Christ as a Victim to the Divine Majesty. Before His death, Jesus gave into her motherly care Saint John, the disciple whom He loved. He represented all the faithful but especially his favored ones, His priests.

He gave me then to His Mother as well and placed my priestly career under her maternal protection. She marked me off from that moment from among all her future children and she placed on my shoulders her maternal mantle. As He gave Saint John to his Mother, so He also gave his Mother to Saint John, that he should take her home with him, that he should take care of her and console her in Christ’s absence during the rest of her pilgrimage on earth.

In like manner, Christ has given me His Mother, her honor, her glory, the defense of her privileges. I have to help spread her devotion everywhere; inspire in others the faithful confidence and love for their Mother in heaven, the Mother of Perpetual Help! Remember the tears that she shed, the anguish she endured in her Mother’s heart at the time of Christ’s Passion. Remember that in its apostolic task the Church rightly looks to the one who bore Christ. In the words of Lumen gentium: “Christ who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin in order that He might also be born and grow in the hearts of the faithful. In her whole life this virgin mother showed herself as an example of that motherly love that must animate all who share in the apostolic mission of the Church for the regeneration of mankind.”

There will be NO LATIN MASS on Friday, October 19th. There will be NO LATIN MASS October 22nd through October 26th due to the annual clergy conference in Branson, MO.

The purpose of the rosary is to help us meditate on the great mysteries of our salvation. Pius XII called it a compendium of the gospel. The main focus is on Jesus—His birth, life, death and resurrection. The Our Father’s remind us that Jesus' Father is the initiator of salvation. The Hail Mary’s remind us to join with Mary in contemplating these mysteries. They also make us aware that Mary was and is intimately joined with her Son in all the mysteries of His earthly and heavenly existence.

The rosary’s appeal lies in the fact that it is simple. The constant repetition of words helps us to contemplate the mysteries of God. We sense that Jesus and Mary are with us in the joys and sorrows of life. We grow in hope that God will bring us to share in the glory of Jesus and Mary forever. In his apostolic letter “The Rosary of the Virgin Mary” Pope John Paul II states:

“The rosary, though clearly Marian in character, is at heart a Christ-centered prayer. It has all the depth of the gospel message in its entirety. It is an echo of the prayer of Mary, her perennial Magnificat for the work of the redemptive Incarnation which began in her virginal womb.... It can be said that the rosary is, in some sense, a prayer-commentary on the final chapter of the Vatican II Constitution Lumen Gentium, a chapter that discusses the wondrous presence of the Mother of God in the mystery of Christ and the Church.”

Although Jesus Christ is God, he willed while on earth to receive everything through His Mother. It is to her that He made known all His needs, and addressed all His requests. I likewise address to her all my prayers and receive everything from her mother’s hand. Jesus is infinitely good and powerful. He is ready to give us all! But He will not do so except on receiving a sign from His Immaculate Mother! She is the distributor, the Mediatrix of All Graces.

There will be a potluck dinner on Sunday, October 7 immediately following the 2:30pm Mass in the school cafeteria. All are invited.

Jesus Christ loves pure souls. His Mother Mary was immaculate. His foster-father was the just and chaste Joseph. His well-beloved disciple was the virgin apostle. Over the course of centuries Christ has surrounded Himself with a legion of chaste priests. Nothing soiled can approach his altar. Pure souls are the crown of Christ’s glory, the strength and beauty of the Church, the confusion and terror of demons!

Priestly chastity is a precious pearl, but we are all called to live chaste lives! God has left our human nature with a tendency toward evil, its passions, and its secret connivance at sin. But at the same time He has poured out prodigally upon us His divine strength through the indwelling of the Holy Ghost. We have been given mortal bodies with frailties, inconstancies and revolts, but Christ has prepared us for heavenly food, the bread of angels, His Body and Blood, to extinguish within us the fire of sin, to renew our strength and to sustain our courage!

God permits the angel of Satan to lay snares for us, to subject us to incessant combats, but Christ has confided us at the same time to His Mother. She has crushed the head of the serpent! She will always fight for you if you are faithful in appealing to her for aid. With her help you are sure to triumph. But know well that it is necessary to watch and to pray even to old age, even until death. Be courageous! No one is tried beyond his strength! No one will receive a crown unless he fights manfully!

Be chaste. How miserable your heart will be if you simulate virtue when your conscience accuses you of wickedness! In today’s culture we are in almost constant contact with the slime of sin. Vice speaks to us, looks at us, surrounds us and pursues us wherever we go! How can we avoid filth unless we are vigilant? We must keep a firm and constant hold on the divine hand of God!

Chastise your body and bring it into subjection. Flee from the occasion of sin. If to avoid sin it is necessary to sacrifice your eye or your right hand or your very life, do not hesitate. Otherwise you will fall, you will perish. Confess your faults humbly. Have recourse to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Virgin Most Pure, that you may fight your battle with strength and confidence!

Jesus Christ emphasizes His power to forgive sins in today’s Gospel. However, we must remember that God does in fact inflict punishment upon those who remain obstinate. The Scriptures do not mention any sin so severely chastised as the sin of impurity. There are many examples, but perhaps the most popular is the great deluge. It was because of sins of impurity that God sent upon the earth the great flood, when it rained for forty days and forty nights. With the exception of eight people along with Noah and the ark, all were destroyed. Saint Isidore writes: “There is no vice which so much enslaves men to the Devil as impurity.” It isn’t enough to simply fight impurity; we must win the victory and root the sin out of our lives permanently!

We must pray and flee from all occasions to sin in order to be successful in our efforts. It is impossible to conquer this vice without God’s assistance. If we are tempted to sin against chastity, we must immediately turn to God for help. We should pray the Hail Mary and repeat the Holy name of Jesus Christ. We must rid ourselves of the thoughts instantly; otherwise Satan will redouble his efforts to attack.

There will be no Latin Mass from Thursday, September 20th through Wednesday, September 26th, with the exception of Sunday, September 23rd. The Celebrant for the Sunday Mass on the 23rd will be Father William Hogdson.

When the Lord spoke to Moses on Mt. Sinai, Moses asked that he might see the divine glory. The Lord responded: “I will make all my beauty pass before you…but my face you cannot see, for no man sees me and still lives…” (Ex 33. 18-23). The infinite God, the God of ineffable glory, is so far above all creatures, that the human creature, by its natural powers, can never behold Him as He is. In the New Testament, the Epistle of Blessed Saint Paul to Timothy reiterates this teaching: “(God) is King of kings and Lord of lords. He alone possesses immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light. No one has ever seen or ever can see Him. To Him be honor and might forever! Amen” (1 Tim 6.15f). John 1.18 speaks in the same vain.

Yet Jesus promises, “Blest are the single-hearted, for they shall see God” (Mt 5.8); and Paul, in enumerating the gifts that God bestows upon His beloved, speaks of the immediate vision of God as His ultimate gift: “Now we see indistinctly, as in a (dark) mirror; then we shall see face to face. My knowledge is imperfect now; then I shall know even as I am known” (1 Cor 13.12).

John tells us that we cannot imagine what God has in store for us who are His children, but this we know, that we shall see Him as He is: “Dearly beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall later be has not yet come to light. We know that when it comes to light we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is” (1 Jn 3.2). Notice that John says, “We shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.” It is because we are made like God, sharing in His divine nature (cf. 2 Pet 1.4), that we shall be able to see God as He sees Himself!

The Blessed Virgin Mary is by far our most powerful intercessor! We should have recourse to her constantly in order to draw closer to Jesus Christ her Son. Mary’s sinless soul was filled with the Divine Spirit of Jesus Christ far and above all other human souls. Her intimate union with Christ makes it impossible for her son to refuse any request on her part!

There is absolutely no quicker way to conform ourselves to the person of Jesus Christ than by meditating upon the mysteries of His life. We do this when we pray the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Saint Louis Marie de Montfort writes that: “All our perfection consists in being conformed, united and consecrated to Jesus Christ; and therefore the most perfect of all devotions is, without any doubt, that which the most perfectly conforms, unites and consecrates us to Jesus Christ. Now Mary, being the most conformed of all creatures to Jesus Christ, it follows that of all devotions, that which most consecrates and conforms the soul to our Lord is devotion to His Holy Mother; that the more a soul is consecrated to Mary, the more it is consecrated to Jesus Christ.”

The best reasons for praying the Holy Rosary are the following:

1) For world peace… “Say the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world.” (Our Lady of Fatima, 1917). The Popes have highly recommended the Rosary to promote peace throughout the world.

2) A means for preserving the home…”There is no surer means of calling down God’s blessings upon the family…than the daily recitation of the Rosary”… Pope Pius XII

3) For courage in the hardships of life …”a powerful means of renewing our courage will undoubtedly be found in the Holy Rosary”…Pope Leo XIII

4) As a ready and easy means of preserving the faith…”We have elsewhere brought it to the attention of the devout Christian that not least among the advantages of the Rosary is the ready means it puts in his hands to nurture his faith, and to keep him from ignorance of his religion and the danger of error”…Pope Leo XIII

Surrender to Christ

Christ is faithful and will never abandon us. We should treat Him as our best of friends. The reason we were born was to ultimately be with Him in heaven. As Christians, we live in this world, but are not of this world. Our true home is in heaven. We should therefore constantly strive to obtain eternal life. In order to do so we must rely on the grace provided by Jesus Christ. We cannot merit heaven on our own because of our fallen nature.

We should have recourse to the Blessed Virgin Mary always and beg her to come to us along with her son Jesus Christ. We should ask with confidence. Christ comes to us in the Blessed Sacrament and we may receive Him whenever we wish. He gives us His Flesh and Blood and no enemy in the world can touch us when we have the Son of God on our side!

Let us surrender ourselves completely to Jesus Christ. Let us ask the Blessed Virgin Mary to draw us closer to Him. Let us allow the will of Christ to always work in and through us as His followers.

Jesus Christ abased Himself before the Majesty of God the Father. He took the form of a servant. He willed to be thought of as the lowest of men, a man of sorrow. Jesus is the Holy of Holies, separated from sinners, but He took on Himself the sins of all men.

Jesus has drawn upon Himself all the blows of God’s anger. We are God’s creatures. We are infinitely dependent on our Creator, Redeemer and Sanctifier. Without God’s grace we cannot possibly make any progress and we cannot persevere without being supported by God’s grace.

We must therefore humble ourselves before God the Father as the publican does in the Gospel. If we acknowledge our lowliness, God will draw near to us. We must learn to keep our hearts contrite and humble in God’s presence. We cannot attribute to ourselves any talent, success or good work. We must realize what is ours and what is God’s.

Let us pray that we will be humble and recognize our sins.

Temptation and Prayer

No person is above temptation. The holiest saints all passed through temptation. Jesus Christ Himself allowed temptation to come his way. However, we will never be tempted past what we can endure. But we must always have recourse to prayer. It is through temptations that we discover who we are...

Pray constantly. Never become discouraged in the midst of temptation. Trust in God. Renew your confidence in Him. Increase your faith and you will live in peace even during the most trying times of temptation.

Jesus sincerely loved His own people. He worked countless miracles on their behalf to prove He was the Son of God and the Messiah spoken of in the Scriptures. But the Jewish people did not appreciate the grace that Jesus Christ offered them. The religious leaders rejected Him and called for His crucifixion.

Christ has instituted the sacraments for our benefit. He comes to each of us particularly through them. He teaches us through the magisterium of His Church. He constantly forgives our failings. We must never take His presence for granted or reject Him altogether.

In the Gospel Christ throws out of the temple the buyers and sellers. He reminds them that the temple is a house of prayer. We should realize that prayer is the first way that we invite Christ into our hearts. It is through prayer that we are strengthened and become more disposed to receive grace. We must never neglect our prayer!

Grace

Grace is what makes us whole. Grace is what heals our ills. Grace is what allows us to become holy. Grace is a gift from God. We receive grace according to the capacity with which we allow ourselves to be disposed to do so. Open up your heart. Beg God for a share in the same graces He gave to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Believe firmly in what is not seen by the eyes. There is much more than what the eyes of your body reveal. What is seen belongs to this world, but what is not seen belongs to our true homeland in heaven. Be always ready to receive the giving of grace!

Seek the Good of Others

From a letter to the Corinthians by Saint Clement, pope:

The command has been written: Cling to the saints, for those who cling to them will be sanctified. There is a passage in Scripture as well which states: "With the innocent man you will be innocent, and with the chosen you will be chosen also; likewise with the perverse you will deal perversely..."

Why are there strife and passion, schisms and even war among you? Do we not possess the same Spirit of grace which was given to us and the same calling in Christ? Why do we tear apart and divide the body of Christ? Why do we revolt against our own body...?

We should put an end to this division immediately...


Father Angelo Vanderputten, FSSP, has volunteered to offer Mass in the Extraordinary Form at Saint Agnes Cathedral on July 15th at 2:30pm. There will be Mass on July 15th at 2:30pm at Saint Agnes Cathedral.

FR FASCHING WILL BE ON RETREAT BEGINNING SATURDAY, JULY 14th. THERE WILL BE NO LATIN MASS ON SUNDAY, JULY 15TH AT 2:30PM. THERE WILL BE NO LATIN MASS JULY 16TH THROUGH JULY 20TH. THE LATIN MASS WILL RESUME ON SUNDAY, JULY 22nd AT 2:30PM.


The wonderful effects of baptism should remind us of the profound meaning of this rite which Jesus Christ Himself instituted. Baptism should remind us of the Passion of Christ as well as the future glory won for us as a result of His Passion. Baptism gives us a “new birth” and at the same time presupposes a symbolic death.

When we were baptized we were born into a new life. We were freed from the darkness of sin and entered into a new light. God removes every trace of sin in baptism and also remits the penalties that these sins incur. We are given all the graces necessary to live a good Christian life. The soul receives the mark of a Christian forever!

Christ suffered physical death. In baptism we die spiritually to the life of sin. Because of Christ’s death sin and satan no longer have power over us. However, we must exercise our own personal effort in order to remain dead to sin. God’s grace is always with us provided that we cooperate with it.

Friday, June 15, 2012: A plenary indulgence may be gained by saying the Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus publicly in front of the Blessed Sacrament today. I will lead those who attend Mass on the Feast of the Sacred Heart in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament Exposed. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will continue for a period followed by Benediction.

Corpus Christi is a special day in the life of the Church. What an infinite treasure Christ has bestowed upon us in giving Himself in the Blessed Sacrament! Our Lord Jesus Christ is truly present—Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the consecrated host. The words of our Savior are clear: “Take ye and eat, this is my Body, which shall be delivered for you…This chalice is the new testament in My Blood; this do ye, as often as you shall drink, for the commemoration of Me.”

We must take great pains to consume the Body and Blood of Christ in a worthy manner, lest we be guilty of the Body and Blood of the Lord. Saint Paul is very explicit when he says: “For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the Body of the Lord!”

Jesus says in the Gospel: “My Flesh is meat indeed, and My Blood is drink indeed. He that eateth My Flesh, and drinketh My Blood, abideth in Me, and I in him…He that eateth this bread shall live for ever!”

The Divine Mystery of the Church

There exists various aspects of the Church. For example, the human and divine, the visible and invisible, the changing and permanent, the sinful and the holy, the fallible and the infallible. All of these make up the divine mystery that is the Church. We should all understand that what we choose to do or not do has a direct impact on our personal spiritual life. We should always be aware that God has called us to Himself through supporting and being supported by one another in the community of faith and love which is the Church.

We should have an understanding of what it means to be a People of God, the Body of Christ, the Temple of the Holy Ghost, and the communion of saints. By virtue of our baptismal consecration and confirmation we all have a responsibility to bear witness to Christ. When we received the Holy Ghost at baptism and confirmation we were given the power and ability to do just that!

We must "stir up" within ourselves the Holy Ghost we received and joyfully share with others our tremendous gifts. We must make Christ known to others by utilizing whatever means God has given us. We must be "soldiers" for Christ if we are to fulfill our confirmation promise!

After Jesus Christ breathed upon His Apostles and filled them with the Holy Ghost they were finally able to grasp the fact that our Lord Jesus Christ, who was truly born of the Blessed Virgin Mary, truly suffered and died, had actually truly risen from the dead as well! The cross had given scandal to them and their faith in the resurrection was weak, but now they firmly believed in the risen Christ!

The Apostles experienced great joy at the Ascension because they realized they too would share in the glorified humanity they were witnessing in Christ Jesus. We too should feel the same joy. We too will share in these same gifts!
