Our goal is this life should be to serve God perfectly. Faith is necessary in order to be saved. Hope is also necessary in order to have pure and right motives so as to please God in all our actions. But charity urges us to love God because He is infinitely good and He deserves to be loved.

Charity is a theological virtue that God infuses into our hearts by which we learn to love Him with our whole heart and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God. We must pray each day that we learn to love God above all things, even ourselves! To love God means being willing to lose fortune, good name, parents, friends, children, husband, wife, even our own life, rather than to lose God by committing a mortal sin.

Man was created to love God, therefore we can only find happiness in God alone. God alone is capable of satisfying us and making us truly happy. Turn to Him!

“Charity is patient, is kind...is not provoked to anger.” 1Cor. 13:4.5. Charity is never wearied and is never impatient with the ungrateful. It is not irritated when repulsed, but perseveres in loving and doing good. Charity should not look for gratitude. Even when coldness and hostility are encountered it should continue to give itself...all for love of God!

The characteristic of charity, according to Saint Paul, is that it does not permit itself to be “overcome by evil” but it “overcomes evil by good.” Rom. 12:21.

Charity is completely forgetful of self. The soul who truly loves God spends itself for its neighbor because love of God and love of neighbor are one and the same! Love of neighbor has its source in God!

“Teach me, O Lord, to love my neighbor even when not loved by him, to love him with no concern for my own benefit, but solely because You love me, solely to repay Your gratuitous love.” St. Catherine of Sienna.

Remember that our neighbor is every man, known or unknown, friend or enemy!

A plenary indulgence may be gained by visiting a church on the second day of August and reciting there an Our Father and the Creed.


Sanctifying grace and charity alone give supernatural life to the soul. St. Thomas says that while grace and charity sanctify the soul and unite it to God, these gifts are ordered for the good of others. St. Paul himself says: ...”all this without charity, is nothing.” Charity is always the most fundamental characteristic of the Christian soul. It is also the greatest gift the Holy Ghost can give us! “No man can say the Lord Jesus but by the Holy Ghost,” says St. Paul. A soul not vivified by the Holy Ghost cannot perform acts of supernatural value.

Humility is the virtue which allows us to practice charity. In the parable of the Pharisee and the publican, the Pharisee praises himself and is puffed up with pride. He cannot pray because he has no charity. Remember the words of St. James: “God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.” Jas. 4:6. The pride of the the Pharisee is his condemnation, whereas the attitude of the publican is completely different. He is a poor man who knows he has sinned. In humility he trusts in God's mercy: “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” God loves to pardon the humble! St. Augustine says: “God prefers humility in things that are done badly, rather than pride in those which are done well.” We are not justified by our virtues and good works, but by grace and charity!

The Scriptures teach us that we are children of God. By virtue of our Baptism we have died to our old life of sin and risen to a new life in Jesus Christ! God has allowed us to participate in His own Divine nature! As children of God we are bound to live in union with one another. We must love God in our neighbor. St. Paul teaches us that we must have compassion for one another, living with all humility and mercy. If we are zealous in doing good we sanctify the Lord Jesus Christ in our hearts.

Mass on December 5th will be followed by adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and benediction.

December 8 (Immaculate Conception) is a holy day of obligation in the United States.

Mass in the Extraordinary Form on Christmas day (December 25) will be at 2:30pm.

Jesus Christ comes to confound our pride and to destroy our false sense of superiority. When Saint John's disciples ask Him: “Who are you?” His only answer is: “Relate what you have heard and seen.” Christ wants to teach us that it is our works that define who we are, not our words. Our works, whether good or bad, are what form us. It is by them that we ought to be recognized.

If one is asked the question: “Who are you?” it is not enough simply to say “I am a Christian.” A faithful follower of Christ should be living in a manner that one will clearly recognize this person to be someone who loves God with his whole heart, one who keeps the Commandments, goes to Confession, goes to Holy Communion and does all things worthy of a Christian. It is not enough simply to be called a Christian. We must perform the works of a Christian as well. We must begin by admitting that we are nothing, can do nothing and know nothing except for the grace of God!

Our next pot-luck dinner will take place in the school cafeteria on Sunday, September 14th immediately following the 2:30pm Mass. All are invited.

Mass on September 5th will be followed by adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and benediction.

In addition to serving as celebrant for Mass in the Extraordinary Form (Latin) here at Saint Agnes Cathedral in Springfield, Fr. Fasching continues to serve as chaplain to the non-Catholic hospitals in the Springfield area. These include Cox South, Cox North, Cox Walnut Lawn, Ozarks Community Hospital, and Select Specialty Hospital.

Fr. Fasching also assists Father Paul Wightman, O.M.I., with his parishes including Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mansfield; Sacred Heart, Mountain Grove; Saint Leo the Great, Ava; Saint William, Gainesville; and Saint Michael, Cabool.

As you know, there is no scheduled Latin Mass during the week on Mondays. This is Father Fasching's day off. You are asked not to attempt to contact him on this day.

God's greatest commandment is to love Him with one's whole heart and mind. We are then commanded to love our neighbor as ourselves. God delights in those who hope in Him and trust in His mercy. He calls us to show the same mercy towards our brethren. Acts of mercy and charity trump any formal act of prayer or devotion. We can never be too busy to assist a neighbor in need. We must always remember that when we serve our neighbor out of kindness, we serve God Himself! The quicker we respond to the needy and the more joyful our disposition, the more pleasing our act will be to God.

The next pot-luck dinner will be Sunday, October 6th following the 2:30pm Latin Mass.

It is entirely possible for one form of ritual to be more efficacious than another form. At the present time, we have two forms of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass—the Ordinary Form and the Extraordinary Form. When one form is offered with greater solemnity, it tends to be more efficacious that one that is offered with less solemnity. The solemnity gives greater glory to God. Since Jesus Christ is the King and Ruler of the universe, He deserves a greater ritual than any earthly king!

The ritual of the Holy Sacrifice is a combination of prayers and gestures. Prayer itself has governing principles that make it meritorious, and these principles can be applied to the ritual of the Mass. Saint Thomas observes that vocal prayer is done in order to render God His due and to move man’s mind and heart toward Him. Prayer is an act of the virtue of religion and we pray as God’s creatures because it is our duty.

The same principle can be applied to the ritual of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The ritual of the Mass ought to be ordered to God and not to man, except insofar as man is served in order to serve God. In other words, God is the end of the ritual, not man. This follows the order of charity in which we love God first and then our neighbor for the sake of God. The ritual should not have man as its finality, but God. If it has man as its finality, it goes contrary to charity, which has God as its end. It will also go contrary to justice since one will not render to God through the prayers of the ritual what it due to Him.
