“It is said that someone lives according to the flesh when he lives for himself. Therefore, in this case, by “flesh” is meant the whole person. For everything which stems from a disordered love of oneself is called work of the flesh.” (St. Augustine).

Saint Paul, when speaking of “the works of the flesh” mentions not only fornication and impurity, but also idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger, and envy. These are all sins stemming from a “life according to the flesh” which is the opposite of the “life according to the spirit.” (St. John Paul II).

Man's ultimate goal is God. If we wish to attain this goal we must commit ourselves to Him completely! Many people do not have God as their ultimate goal. They often choose wealth of some kind or something else. This becomes their god. Man cannot have two absolute and contrary goals!

When we genuinely fulfill the law of Jesus Christ and accept the Word of God completely, we will always be successful! In addition, we will discover that God will give us a spirit that comes from knowing “the glorious freedom of the children of God.” This is a spirit of confidence and joy much like the Apostles possessed after receiving the Holy Ghost. It is a confidence that enables one to boldly proclaim one’s faith in every circumstance. This is our Christian duty. If we have any shame or hesitation in doing so we are denying Jesus Christ. A failure to profess one’s faith for fear of ridicule or criticism is sinful.

Friday, August 2nd is the first Friday of the month. There will be adoration of the Blessed Sacrament followed by benediction after the 12:15pm Mass.

At the Last Supper, Jesus told His disciples that He is the vine and they are the branches; if they remain in Him they will bear much fruit, but if they are cut off from Him they can do nothing for eternal life (Jn 15.4f). Saint Paul teaches that whatever good deeds one accomplishes, if one does not have charity (and therefore the state of grace which always accompanies it), one gains nothing “If I give everything I have to feed the poor and hand over my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing,” (1 Cor. 13.2).

In its Decree on Justification, ch. 16, the Council of Trent teaches: “Jesus Christ Himself continuously infuses strength into the justified, as the head into the members (Eph 4.15) and the vine into the branches (Jn 15.5); this strength always precedes, accompanies, and follows their good works which, without it, could in no way be pleasing to God and meritorious.” One who is in a state of mortal sin is spiritually dead and therefore cannot merit anything! We must pray that we will always serve God in purity of heart.
