Friday, August 2nd is the first Friday of the month. There will be adoration of the Blessed Sacrament followed by benediction after the 12:15pm Mass.

At the Last Supper, Jesus told His disciples that He is the vine and they are the branches; if they remain in Him they will bear much fruit, but if they are cut off from Him they can do nothing for eternal life (Jn 15.4f). Saint Paul teaches that whatever good deeds one accomplishes, if one does not have charity (and therefore the state of grace which always accompanies it), one gains nothing “If I give everything I have to feed the poor and hand over my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing,” (1 Cor. 13.2).

In its Decree on Justification, ch. 16, the Council of Trent teaches: “Jesus Christ Himself continuously infuses strength into the justified, as the head into the members (Eph 4.15) and the vine into the branches (Jn 15.5); this strength always precedes, accompanies, and follows their good works which, without it, could in no way be pleasing to God and meritorious.” One who is in a state of mortal sin is spiritually dead and therefore cannot merit anything! We must pray that we will always serve God in purity of heart.

The best reasons for praying the Holy Rosary are the following:

1) For world peace… “Say the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world.” (Our Lady of Fatima, 1917). The Popes have highly recommended the Rosary to promote peace throughout the world.

2) A means for preserving the home…”There is no surer means of calling down God’s blessings upon the family…than the daily recitation of the Rosary”… Pope Pius XII

3) For courage in the hardships of life …”a powerful means of renewing our courage will undoubtedly be found in the Holy Rosary”…Pope Leo XIII

4) As a ready and easy means of preserving the faith…”We have elsewhere brought it to the attention of the devout Christian that not least among the advantages of the Rosary is the ready means it puts in his hands to nurture his faith, and to keep him from ignorance of his religion and the danger of error”…Pope Leo XIII

Many saints have had mystical experiences of hell. One well know account is contained in the report on the Fatima apparitions which Lucia Santos, one of the seers of Fatima, submitted to Dom Jose, bishop of Leiria, on 31 August 1941. Lucia writes that during the apparition of 13 July 1917, Our Lady gave the three children a momentary glimpse of hell to encourage them to pray for sinners.

After the vision ended, Our Lady urged the children to pray and offer many sacrifices to save sinners from hell. The Holy Rosary is a most powerful means to do so! It is a weapon to combat evil. It is a powerful means of obtaining Christian perfection and graces from God.

JUNE 10, 2012 IS THE SOLEMNITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI. MASS WILL BEGIN AT 2:00 PM. A PROCESSION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT WILL IMMEDIATELY FOLLOW.

Jesus Christ speaks very clearly when He says in the Gospel that the Holy Ghost will teach all the truth. If one wishes to be fully incorporated into the Church of Christ one must embrace the entire system of the Catholic Church:

They are fully incorporated into the society of the Church who, possessing the Spirit of Christ, accept her entire system and all the means of salvation given her, and through union with her visible structure are joined to Christ, who rules her through the Supreme Pontiff and the bishops. This joining is effected by the bonds of professed faith, of the sacraments, of ecclesiastical government, and of communion. (LG 14b-366)

To be fully incorporated into the Church one must be united to it by all of the bonds, interior and exterior. The interior bonds of the Holy Ghost include sanctifying grace, faith, hope and love. The exterior bonds include the same professed faith, sacraments, government, and communion.

Pray for Christian unity.

We are now celebrating the Church Unity Octave. January 18 to 25 inclusive focuses on the intention of the unity of the entire Catholic Church. The dogmatic constitution Pastor Aeternus proposed that the Roman Pontiff, as successor of Saint Peter, has primacy of jurisdiction over the whole Church and that he is infallible when defining doctrines of faith and morals as binding in faith on the universal Church. Christ established the Church in order to continue for all time the saving work of redemption…so that in the Church…all the faithful might be united together in the bond of one faith and one love.

Furthermore, Christ made Saint Peter head of the Church in order that Peter might be “the visible foundation of a twofold unity,” namely; “that the episcopate might be one and undivided, and that the whole multitude of believers might be preserved in unity of faith and communion…”

The council explains why it is necessary to define the Church’s teaching concerning “the establishment, the perpetuity, and nature of this sacred apostolic primacy.” The reason is to promote “the protection, the safety, and the increase of the Catholic flock,” and to strengthen the Church against the attacks that at that time were being made against her by her enemies. The council believed that the Church would be strengthened against these and other ills if the authority of the Supreme Pontiff, which was strongly supported by the vast majority of Catholics, were confirmed by its solemn decrees.

The council teaches that because the Roman Pontiff is head of the whole Church by divine right, he is supreme judge of the faithful in all matters pertaining to Church life. All cases referred to him, and no case decided by him can be reviewed by any other authority. His judgment is final. Once the pope has decided an issue, it is not permitted to appeal over his head to any other tribunal, not even to a general council.

The papal office exists to preserve the purity of the faith, to serve Christian unity, and to minister to the needs of the Catholic community. Let us pray during this octave for a unity of faith which is so desperately needed in our time.
